Blast Costs 3 Police Officers While Executing Property Removal Procedure in Northern Italy

Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and no fewer than 15 others sustained injuries in a seemingly intentional detonation from gas at a rural property in northern Italy.

Event Timeline

The blast took place as police and firefighters approached the house near Verona to enforce an court-ordered eviction for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.

Each of the three officers killed served in the Carabinieri military police.

Legal Proceedings

Two individuals were arrested at the site and one more individual who ran away after the explosion was located soon after. All three have been admitted to hospital.

The explosion could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the location displayed the building reduced to a pile of rubble.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the past.

Property Situation

The leader of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, stated the farmhouse was facing an court order due to financial obligations incurred by the property owners.

Negotiators had been sent to engage the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the police arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe a family member caused the explosion.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno informed the media.

A propane tank had been ignited, and the blast immediately struck our officers,” he explained.

Incendiary devices were also located at the residence, the Interior Minister stated.

Impact Assessment

Those injured by the explosion consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as three members of Italy's state police and a fire services member.

According to the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had was without power.

The prosecutor believed the explosion had occurred on a level above the entrance and informed the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the incident, he revealed officers had “heard a whistle, likely the gas cylinders being opened”.

Neighbor Statements

“We all knew the situation was dire,” nearby inhabitants stated to local news, adding that the family members had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

The Defense Minister the Defence Minister joined other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three men who had died in the service of their country.
